Dulwich Village has always been a great place to hang out and indulge in some people watching, but it seems that the tables have turned in Romeo Jones. This time the spectators are of the canine variety and they are watching our visitors as they gossip over lunch.
Hanging from the walls are a series of striking dog portraits photographed by local artist Kirsty Barton, whose empathy with these beasts is clearly evident as she captures the individual character of each dog. Lulu, the very regal English Bull Terrier takes pride of place above the fire place, whilst Lala, the Great Dane rather disconcertingly gazes across the room at the cupcakes and Lionel the Lurcher’s countenance simply says, “Love me”. Labradors and terriers complete the pack of begging dogs around the tables.
Kirsty can often be spotted jogging in Dulwich Park, where she says she chats to the dogs she comes across knowing them by name, but rarely their owners’. This empathy with her muses when in the studio, combined with patience, treats & bribery truly enable her to capture the personalities of these faithful friends, to the great delight of their adoring owners.
When asked if she had ever been attacked by one of her subjects, “nearly licked to death”, was her response. Then asked if she hadn’t been an artist, what she would do, “stunt double”, seemed an apt reply.
You can see Kirsty Barton’s work in Romeo Jones until March 31st 2010.
